Why did mile2 change the name of its widely popular CPTS course to CPTEngineer?

... and why did mile2 change the name of other courses?

Mile2 made the decision to change many of our program names during summer of 2009. The step was taken so that our course names reflect the maturing state of the information security industry.

In the late 1990's and early 2000's computer security was still the domain of specialists, although not exclusively. Times have changed. Much of what used to be highly specialized is now basic information security literacy. IT security has developed beyond the realm of specialists and has matured into a more structured field with concrete certifications. The change in some of our programs from xxxSpecialist to xxxEngineer reflects this reality.

Those who were formerly specialists are now behaving more like "engineers" in their methodical investigative, trouble-shooting, and problem solving behavior. Those who were experts in the field are now acting as consultants for organizations in the security marketplace. The name change reflects this.

mile2 does not simply throw lots of "specialized" information at its students. We take them through a methodical process, a behavioral framework from which they can model their pentesting activities. mile2 also teaches students how to professionally report that information to management in client organizations. We have moved beyond specialized training. mile2 is producing security engineers and security consultants.

(a) The 'Certified Penetration Testing Specialist' training & certification program was upgraded to version 10 in July 2009, and on August 1, CPTS v10 was retitled to CPTEngineer v1.

(b) The incredible developments in information security since then have necessitated weekly updates to CPTEngineer v1, and we are now at CPTEngineer version 2.3. Can you believe that? Who knows, we might be at version 4 or 5 by the end of the year!
